dharmalogos I'm not sure how to review a field recording. I'll just say this manages to be haunting and relaxing at the same time.

about

In the wee hours of 24 September 2022, Fiona, a massive post-tropical storm, battered the Maritime provinces. Out here on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, we were spared from the most intense winds; nevertheless, the storm was incredibly fierce. My house shook for hours, but when the light of day arrived, I was happy to discover that the structure was intact. Unfortunately, many folks in the region weren’t so lucky.

I couldn’t sleep during the storm, so I did some field recording. I’m presenting two of those pieces here. The first is a simple A/B stereo recording made during the peak of the storm. I recorded this in my cold porch with the door open. The rumble you hear is my house. I left all the sub-bass in this recording, so I recommend listening with decent headphones at high volume. I made the second recording, Electronic Sky, immediately after the cold porch session. For this track, I used a Soma Ether V2, which is a device designed to record electromagnetic fields. I simply stepped into a sheltered spot in the backyard and pointed the thing to the sky. I’d read that hurricanes contain massive amounts of electricity, so I thought I check it out. The track is basically white noise. I won’t make any grand claims about what I actually captured here. But I like to think these sounds are from a hidden dimension of the storm.

The photo is of the underside of a tree that Fiona uprooted in my neighbour’s yard.

Thanks for listening.

about

chik white Nova Scotia

chik white is the moniker I use for my work as a free improviser. For years, my instrument of choice was the jaw harp, but recently, I’ve expanded my practice to include voice, nose flutes, horns, guitar, and harmonica. Along with the many chik white releases chronicled on this page, I’ve also included select field recording works issued under my proper name, Darcy Spidle. ... more
