Electronic Sky

In the wee hours of 23 September 2022, Fiona, a massive post-tropical storm, battered the Maritime provinces. Out here on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, we were spared from the most intense winds; nonetheless, the storm was incredibly fierce. My house shook for hours, but when the light of day arrived, I was happy to discover that the structure was intact. Many in the region weren’t so lucky, including my neighbour, who lost several beautiful trees.

I couldn’t sleep during the storm, so I did some field recording. I’m presenting two of those recordings here. The first is a simple A/B stereo recording made during the peak of the storm. I recorded this in my cold porch with the door open. The rumble you hear is my house. I left all the sub-bass in this recording, so I recommend listening with decent headphones at high volume. I made the second recording, electronic sky, immediately after the cold porch session. For this track, I used a Soma Ether V2, which is a device designed to record electromagnetic fields. I simply stepped into a sheltered spot in the backyard and pointed the thing to the sky. I’d read that hurricanes contain massive amounts of electricity, so I thought I check it out. The track is basically white noise. I won’t make any grand claims about what I actually captured here. But I like to think these sounds are from a hidden dimension of the storm.
