about

Entirely exhausted by urban living, Chik White recently moved up the coast and turned his attention to the tides and sky. Simplicity the new rule. The natural world to be his only informer. And the new music needed to be simple and natural too. The most basic and oldest instrument of all seemed the obvious choice -- a fork and one metal reed plucked between the teeth -- the jews harp. Three beautiful handmade instruments --- one from India, one from Hungary, and one from Germany. Chik spent the winter staring into the windy Chezzetcook Bay playing his harps for hours, lips bleeding and mind unclear from deep and rapid breathing. The more he played, the more possibilities arouse; the virtuosity he once thought easy to attain now a journey with no end.

"Winter in the country is isolating, so Chik hungered for the promise of spring. When it finally did come he set out to explore the coast, harps and recorder in hand, finding ocean locations to build nests for recording and contemplation. The thirteen improvisations on Highest Tide tell the story of Chik White's spring on the Eastern Shore --- birds, waves, wind, and tides. The selections have been cut from over 5 hours of recording and countless hours of playing. Art by Sheryl Haws." DIVORCE

For over a decade I have used the moniker chik white for various art projects. My latest efforts centre around the jaw harp, a pancultural, ancient instrument steeped in mystical allure. Inspired by sound poetry, noise, free improvisation, Dada, nature, psychogeography, and the human voice, my chik white harp explorations aim to conjure visceral experiences. ... more
